Confessions of a Prius Owner

I have a terrible confession to make…my best friend has a Chevy Yukon and while I was visiting her I drove it. Yes I drove it and worse yet, I enjoyed it. It had awesome pick up, great turning radius and best of all I was above the traffic. I was looking down instead of looking up. I felt big and bad and I liked it. Does this make me a traitor to my loving Prius? Does this eradicate the need for this blog? Am I a hypocrite? My answer to these questions and please, feel free to disagree with me, is NO. My Prius is still an energy saving beast of a 4-cylinder, my blog is still geared toward the unnecessary, and I am not a hypocrite because Chevy has been proud to announce the Chevy Tahoe & Yukon Hybrid!! The experts are saying that the fuel economy of these hybrid versions is 25 percent better than their conventional equivalent. (go to http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FirstDrives/articleId=120687 for the full story) Since it’s such a large vehicle and we know that physics tells us it will never get the same gas mileage my Prius gets; do we still feel enviro-friendly satisfaction from owning a Chevy Tahoe or Yukon Hybrid? Will 25% better fuel economy 100% satisfy hybrid loving people like me?

Hi Liz,

I'm glad you enjoyed driving the Chevy Tahoe. We at GM always like to hear that. Thanks for mentioning they do have a hybrid version of it as well.

Hi Adam,

I'm thankful your company understands the importance of hybrid technology. Although the fuel economy isn't that of my Prius, I am a full believer in the catch phrase, 'Every little bit helps."

Thanks for your comment!

Hi, Liz

Got to your blog via Autobloggreen.

To be perfect - one must not own a car at all, but we live in certain reality.

So, I think that if somebody really needs an SUV, a pickup , a van etc. he must not be shamed of it. Even the Prius isn't "green", but it has fewer emissions, than other cars.

The primary calculation must be the cost. We must consider the premium of hybrid SUV's vs. the regular versions against the fuel savings.

At my place - if one buys a new Prius instead a new Corolla - he covers the premium at 200,000 km ( 124,000 miles ) - and the reseller value of the Prius is of course higher.

One should drive a car that meets his needs. There are really lots of people who need cars like Sierra or Silverado. I can't think about one who really needs a Hummer. My testimony is that it's an awfull car even for military needs.

By the way - my car is Opel Astra 1995 - its fuel consumption is about 31MPG. And I feel fine about it.

Hi Emil,

Yes, it would be nice to not own a car at all...and I agree that one must drive what meets ones needs. That seems to be the problem with society and the cars we choose to drive; many just buy cars/SUV's for material justification and for the status symbol they provide. If we can get away from that then we've truly accomplished something.

31MPG is great, but 41 is even better! ;)

Thanks for your comment!
